14 th February.
Ciara, Ko, Simon and Stu keep a blog and the class read these blogs most days. Hamish and Kate have two children who travel everywhere with them. They are only six and four but they have travelled 25,ooo miles . Like us they love Harry Potter books. They go to school only if they are on land but when they are at sea their parents teach them. Hamish has been to Antarctica many times.

The friends met up with Kate and Hamish at Puerto Williams -a port at the bottom of South America and sailed across Drake Passage . This is the sea between S. America and Antarctia. They landed in a place called Whale Harbour at Deception island . This is one of the South Shetland Islands. It has an active volcano and has a black sandy beach. It was once a whaling station but is now an historic site .

Welcome to the GeoBlog of fifth class. For the next few weeks we will be writing about the journey of a boat called SEAL . It is on its way to the Antarctica as we write. We are following its journey on the www.antarctica2007 website.

Did you know that Antarctica is the fifth largest continent. 98% of the hugh landmass is covered in ice. It is at the bottom of the earth. In the winter the sun never rises and in summer it never goes down. It is the coldest and windiest continent. Lots of people visit Antarctica as tourists.
